After a bit of a delayed start, the European Standard course provided several challenges for even the most
experienced handler. I enjoyed the course and got lots of experience on it since I ran it with three different
dogs.
For big dogs, it appeared that bar #6 came down when the handlers were not expecting it. For the little dogs it
seemed that many took the off-course tunnel (#17) at the end of the dogwalk. If you had made it down and
over the A-frame and were clean at that point, you needed to keep your focus to avoid the off-course between
#20 and #21 (#3).
When talking to other handlers about the course, most thought that some of the challenges provided, like the
three jump sections #6-#8 and #12-#14, were things they didn't see often. The competitors enjoyed the
opportunity to run their dogs at top speed, yet get mental and physical challenges along the way. Thank you to
Wim Bekendam for this fun course!
Deborah Davidson Harpur has been active in dog agility since 1998. Before that she raced karts,
was a nationally ranked driver, and was a writer/editor of Karter News Magazine, a national
publication. Since her move from racing on the track to running different breeds of dogs on the
agility course, she and her dogs have really embraced all that agility offers. More about her team at
